Einstein, Bees, Toilet

December 13th, 2010

A colleague went hiking in northern Italy earlier this year, and encountered this:

What the Bee Saw

October 31st, 2010

Oenothera biennis L. (photographs by Bjørn Rørslett) Bees see the world differently from us. They can see, for example, ultraviolet and polarized light, and although it is probably impossible to ever know exactly what the bees see, Bjørn Rørslett on his amazing website Flowers in Ultra-Violet gives a pretty good approximation. Highly recommended! Glechoma hederacea [...]

Long time, no bees

October 25th, 2010

We haven’t seen many bees in the past few weeks. Must be because both parties don’t get out much these days. The bees are beginning to huddle up for winter and we are all holed up in the editing room. But I can give you a peek at some video bees: a few stills from [...]

North Dakotan Bombus spec.

September 16th, 2010

A colleague just sent me his picture of the mystery-Bombus’ back end. Does this give anybody any new ideas? (click picture to enlarge)

Wild bees in North Dakota – ID needed!

September 1st, 2010

Very quickly: While on the road in North Dakota we were lucky enough to catch some very late sunflowers for beautiful shots of foraging honeybees. We also saw quite a few of these other bees, but have no idea what they are. Can anybody help? (click photo to enlarge)

Heute bei der Post…

August 6th, 2010

Schön, oder? Und – man glaubt es kaum – hier gibt es Bienenbriefmarken aus aller Welt. Viele!! Found these at the post-office today. Was amazed about coincidence (now that we are making a beefilm, suddenly there are bee-stamps?!), but a quick google-search taught me: Bee-stamps are a worldwide phenomenom and actually quite common! Ein paar [...]

Wild bees from home

June 4th, 2010

While I am on the road scouting locations in Montana, my friends at home are becoming more and more bee-aware and sent me this picture. Some brood of some wild bees – but which one? Any ideas anybody?Während ich in den USA unterwegs bin und die Highways in Montana und Idaho abreise, erreicht mich dieses [...]

Biene am Spieß

May 25th, 2010

Found this while out in the Sonoran Desert with a local beekeeper yesterday – a bee speared by a Yucca. How? I have no idea. Do you?

Ein Dreh im Rapsfeld

May 19th, 2010

The bee-virus is spreading

April 14th, 2010

The bee-virus is spreading. Over easter, my friends Johannes (12) and Elisabeth (16) got infected and took these wonderful bee-pictures for me! Das Bienen-Virus greift um sich! Meine Freunde Johannes (12) und Elisabeth (16) sind jedenfalls schon angesteckt. Sie haben über Ostern diese wunderbaren Bienen- und Hummelbilder geschossen. Vielen Dank! Steinhummel (Bombus lapidarius) More on [...]
